1.14 – Practice Becomes Firm Through Long Continuance

sa tu dīrgha-kāla-nairantarya-satkāra-āsevitaḥ dṛḍha-bhūmiḥ

Translation

It becomes firmly rooted when attended to for a long time, without break, and with sincere interest.

Meaning

Yoga is not a sprint. It is a way of life. Dirgha-kala-a long time-and nairantarya-without break-are the conditions for transformation. You do not need to be extraordinary, only consistent.

The mind is old. Its patterns run deep. But given time and steady attention, anything can change. The promise is hidden in this simple sutra: persistence always works.

Commentary – Edwin F. Bryant (The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali)

Bryant notes that the emphasis on long duration suggests yoga is not about sudden enlightenment but about gradual refinement, like the growth of a tree from seed to strength.
