1.22 – And Again, There Are Degrees-Mild, Medium, Intense

mṛdu-madhya-adhimātratvāt tato ‘pi viśeṣaḥ

Translation

And again, there are differences even among the intense, based on whether the practice is mild, medium, or intense.

Meaning

You cannot force the opening. Push too hard and you break. Barely try and nothing happens. The path requires calibration-finding your edge and staying with it. This edge shifts. What is intense today may be mild tomorrow.

The art of yoga is learning to practice at exactly the right intensity: challenging enough to grow, gentle enough to endure.

Commentary – Edwin F. Bryant (The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali)

Bryant notes that this sutra acknowledges individual differences: not everyone can practice with the same intensity. Wisdom is knowing your own capacity and working skillfully within it.
